Zorro
The character is complex - the original Dark Knight. He is slightly unstable, reckless and obsessive. If you met him on the street in the real world, you'd most likely want him locked up, but the legend is irresistable. One of the original superheroes, Don Diego de la Vega, the wealthy son of a California alcalde, masquerades as Zorro, hero of the people and protector of the poor and downtrodden. In the Zorro stories, Don Diego is a dandy, a fusspot and a generally snotty twit of a man that no one can possibly suspect of being the athletic, master swordsman Zorro who defies hordes of soldiers, embarrasses those who abuse their power, and can take down the trousers of an opponent with a single flick of his rapier.

The Legend of Zorro was actually born in 1919 in a novel written by Johston McCully "The Curse of Capistrano", but may have been based on real life Robin Hood Joaquin Murieta (you may recognise the name from the 1998 film "The Mask of Zorro" starring Antoinio Banderas). Murieta, who is sometimes known as 'The Chilean Robin Hood' or 'The Robin Hood of El Dorado' roamed California in the 1850s with his gang The Five Joaquins, causing general mayhem among the American mining camps. The story is that Murieta mined a claim with his wife and was attacked by a group of American miners. He was savagely whipped and his wife was also attacked. To revenge this attack, he and some friends became outlaws, robbing the Americans and helping to assert the rights of Mexicans living in California. The California Rangers were created by the governor to bring Murieta and his band to justice. On July 25, 1853 the Rangers encountered a group of Mexicans that alledgedly included Murieta and Manuel Garcia (also known as Three Fingered Jack) Two of the Mexicans were killed and Harry Love, leader of the Rangers, stated that one of the men was Murieta. Several people verified the identity of Murieta, but a woman claiming to be his sister denied that it was him and sightings of Murieta continued to be reported through the camps after his alledged death. Many claimed that Love had contrived the story of the capture for the reward money. In 1854, the first fictionalized account of Murieta appeared. Several succeeding versions translated into various languages change the details somewhat, but the basic story remains the same. There are books, films and a Russian musical based on the events of Murieta's life.

Others have suggested that the Zorro legend was inspired by Mexican bandits Salmon Pico or Tiburcio Vasquez. Other suggestions are Robin Hood or William Lamport, an Irish soldier exiled to Mexico in the 1670s. Whatever the inspiration for the character, Zorro remains one of the great superheroes, and has been portrayed in several Hollywood films by the likes of Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, and Antonio Banderas. Black mask, cape and rapier - the lone avenger fighting evil and injustice. Who can resist?
