1861 was not a great year for the United States.  In March, 1861, several southern states declared their independence from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, which the Unied States government rejected and the Confederates were labeled rebels.  Actual hostilities broke out in April, when southern Confederate troops attacked the military installation at Fort Sumpter, South Carolina.  The war raged on for 4 years, destroying families and property in its wake. It is estimated that between 600,000 and 700,000 Americans lost their lives in the struggle.

Most greatcoats were sky blue, both Confederate and Union.
