In 1887 in his novel A Study in Scarlet, Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle introduced a character based on a fellow physician (Joseph
Bell) that has since become legend - Sherlock Holmes. Holmes' name
has become synonymous with deductive reasoning. In Conan-Doyles'
novels, Holmes, with his sidekick Dr. Watson, outwitted and apprehended
a number of fiendish criminals. Conan-Doyle himself led a turbulant
life, outlined in his autobiography My Memories and Adventures published
in 1924.
