Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana Perez de Lebron was
born in 1794 and was a central figure in Mexican politics until his death
in 1876. In 1829, He led a Mexican army during the rebellion against
Spain and defeated them, earning the title "Hero of Tampico". His attempt
while President of Mexico to stamp out the Texas rebellion in 1836 led
to his defeat and capture by Sam Houston at San Jacinto. Houston released
him and he returned to Mexico where he was later deposed. He regained
the presidency, was deposed again and exiled to Cuba, where he continued
to conspire to return to power in Mexico. He was permitted to return
to Mexico in 1874 and died there two years later.
