Englands Reformation period was a time of upheaval.
The Roundheads, led by Oliver Cromwell overthrew the Cavliers, who supported
Charles I. Charles, who was considered by many to lean too much toward
Catholicism and believed strongly in the divine right of kings, had enemies
on all sides and was summarily executed - an unheard of event at that time.
Cromwell strengthened the Parliamentary government in England,
Scotland and Ireland (which he brutally conquered). He managed to have
himself named Protector of the nation, a title which he kept until his death,
when the office was left to his son. His son had no power base, however,
and the Royalists managed to assert Charles IIs rights to the throne. Cromwells
body was thereupon dug up, hung in chains and displayed outside Westminster
Abbey until 1685. The body was thrown into a pit, but the head had
several owners until it was finally buried in Sussex in the early 1800s.
Cromwell was a man of innumerable contradictions and is still a subject
of emotional debate. #H235 Short ruffled dress with belled sleeves and netted skirt. Contrasting corset has lace up front and trim. Accessorize with our Cavalier Hat .
