A professor
of phonetics, Henry Higgins is impatient, rude and the epitome of
arrogance. He is quite certain that speech is everything and that
anyone taught to speak properly can advance to the top of
society. On a wager with a colleague, Higgins bets that he can
even take a common Cockney girl who sells flowers in Covent Square
Market and pass her off as a Duchess with training in how to speak and
so the fun begins as Professor Higgins trains Eliza Dolittle how to
speak. My Fair Lady is a musical play written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe based on George Bernard Shaw's stage play Pygmalion. Staged in 1956 orginally, the musical starred Rex Harrison as Higgins and Julie Andrews, in her Broadway debut, as Eliza Doolitte. Gabriel Pascal had acquired the rights to the Shaw play, but Shaw expressly forbid its being made into a musical and so it was shelved until after Shaw's death in 1950. When Rogers and Hammerstein looked at the play, they decided that there were just too many obstacles for a good musical and dropped it. In the interim, Lerner and Leowe had decided to work apart, but when they reunited, they began work on the musical. Pascal had died by this time and the rights were tied up with Chase Manhattan Bank, but they set to work anyway and the bank finally gave them permission to stage their work. The play opened in 1956 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York, moved to various other theatres, and closed 6 years later after 2717 performances - a record at the time. It has been performed thousands of time since, including several revivals on Broadway. My Fair Lady has been called the perfect musical. #N212 Long frock coat, pants, vest and cravat (hat not included). Coat has contrasting collar and buttoned closure.
