Odd looking and dressed in tuxedos, these flightless
birds are scattered across the world. There are 17 different species
of penguin including the Emperor penguins of the Antarctic and the diminutive
Fairy penguin in Australia. Gregarious social animals, nesting areas
contain thousands of birds. Emperor penguins, documented in the film
March of the Penguins mate for life and the male actually incubates
the egg by holding it on his feet for about 52 days, then the males space
themselves so that no intruders can breach the phalax. Other species
build nests in shallow depressions or burrows. Penguin chicks sometimes
take as long as two years to attain their swimming plumage. Until that
