Born on the Italian isle of Corsica in 1769 as Napoleone
Buonaparte. Being a son of minor Italian nobles, he attended the
military academy at Brienne, France and quickly rose to the rank of General
in the army after the French Revolution. A brilliant strategist and
opportunist, he brazened his way into siezing the role of Consul, then
Emperor of the French. His love affair and tumultuous marriage to
Josephine de Beuharnais is the stuff of legend, as is the man himself.
