A Regency gentleman in England, if he was flush in funds, lived a life of luxury and leisure (if not, he either brought himself down in society by  working, emigrated to America to start over, or found himself dodging creditors).  To keep himself in shape, he could take up fencing or boxing or could take up the reins and race horses or coaches.  Evenings were spent at parties or at the card table or flirting with the ladies.  Society was strictly regimented and most knew their place in the scheme of things, but there were many examples of tradesmen and factory owners who jumped the fences between the working men and the gentry.  If a common man made his fortune and craved a higher place in society, he mgiht marry off a daughter or a son into a family of the gentry, or he might, if cost was no object, purchase a title from an impoverished landed family
