The Renaissance saw an advancement of the middle
classes. Labor, which had been plentiful and cheap, was made scarce
by outbreaks of plague and war and those who had skills were better paid for
their services. Foreign trade also contributed to the wealth of merchants
to the extent that some gained titles for themselves or their children. They
found themselves with leisure time and the wealth to enjoy it, engaging in
'noble' pursuits such as study and hunting. A factor was a business
manager for nobility and took care of his affairs. A girl like Lettice
could look forward to an arranged marriage, perhaps with a noblemans son
or another wealthy merchant family. #R794 Blouse has elbow length gathered sleeves and gathered scooped neckline. Vest has lace up front. Skirt is medium full with flounced overskirt.
