Julia Ward Howe is best known as the author of the lyrics to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". The tune was written around 1855 by William Steffe and the original song, a revival spiritual, was called 'Canaans Happy Shores'. It was later given new lyrics to become 'John Browns Body' after the abolitionists death. Howe used the very simple tune to create her verses. An active abolitionist before and during the US civil war, she was a poet and playwrite and in later life became active in the womens sufferage movement, in part due to her own tumultuous marriage #B101 Square necked bodice with three quarter trimmed sleeves and hook and eye closure.
