One of the most famous of beautiful and charming
women, Marie Joseph Rose Tascher de la Pagerie was born in 1763 on the island
of Martinique. Wife of a French aristocrat, Alexandre de Beauharnais,
she (unlike her husband) survived the French Revolution to become the
mistress of the most powerful men in France during the Directoire.
When Napoleon met her, she was 32 years old and widely recognized as the
most facinating woman in France. They were married in 1796.
Josephine was crowned Empress of France with Napoleon, but he later divorced
her and married an Austrian princess. She died shortly after Napoleons
abdication in 1814 at her beloved Malmaison, though she remains today
one of the facinating characters of history..
