The hippy movement was a phenomenon of the 1960s.  Hippies professed 'make love not war' and advocated a tolerant view of individual behaviors and a back to nature way of life.  As the 60s  Flower Children grew older, many of their views became accepted in American life and many others were replaced by the 'shop until you drop' 80s philosophies.
