With infant
mortality and death from illness common in the mid 19th century, life
was precarious for children. During the Civil War, most children were untouched by the violence that was tearing the United Staes apart, but some were caught up in it, including the more than 300 children that are documented to have served in combat during the Civil War, many as young as 9 years old. Most, however, were allowed to be children and played with their toys - china head dolls or rag dolls were popular for girls. Popular toys for boys included toy soldiers (usually made of lead) or rocking horses. Life in country towns and farms could be tough on children and they were expected to contribute to the family labor pool. Country childrens toys were usually much simpler - corn husk dolls and hoops or handcarved wooden toys. Clothing for children was generally modeled on two factors: simplicity and the ability to last. This little confection is definitely not simple, but does make the wearer look like one of those china dolls. #C240 The dress has a slightly higher than natural waistline, a trimmed bodice with rear button closure and full skirt, ruffled with lace.
