Napoleon surrounded himself with memorable and (for
the most part) able generals who commanded his armies and, sometimes, governed
the territory they conquered. They were known as Marechal de France,
or Marshals of France, a title handed down from medieval Frankish kings.
Auguste Frederic Louis Marmont (who is best known for changing sides at
the end of Napoleons military career) and Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte
(who surrendered his title to become King of Sweden) were a couple of Napoleons
best known marshals.
