A flapper was the new breed of woman that
appeared in the 1920s. They wore short skirts and
bobbed their
hair. They
smoked, wore makeup, flirted shamelessly, drank in public (at a time
when Prohibition was the law
in the US) and behaved in a manner that previously had been reserved
for
'lewd women'. They were the feminists of their time, The
Charleston, the Shimmy and the Black Bottom
were their dances and they
possessed
their own slang language. A 'manacle' was an engagement
ring. 'The bees knees' was something really fantastic.
