Born in Darke County, Ohio just outside of
Greenville in 1860, Phoebe Ann Mosey became known as the legendary
Annie Oakley when she chose this stage name to join Buffalo Bills Wild
West Show in 1885.
Her shooting skills were such that using a .22 caliber gun at 90
feet
she could split a playing card edge on and hit it six more times before
it landed on the ground. These skills were developed from the age
of 9 when she began hunting to supplement her widowed mother's meager
income
and in doing so paid off her mother's mortgage.. "Little Sure
Shot"s
sharpshooting even gained her a husband - Frank Butler - a fellow
sharpshooter. Their 44 year long happy marriage is still regarded
as a model of celebrity relationships. A legend in her own right,
she mingled with some of historys most colorful characters including
