Abe Lincoln
The 16th President of the United States was
a
remarkable and complicated man. Prone to depression and dark
humors, he nevertheless held office during one of the most crucial
periods in American history
and his actions made him one of the most beloved in US history.
Born near Hodgenville, Kentucky in 1809, he was a
product of frontier
life learning to live as a farmer. His father had a roving
nature
and
the family moved to the Indiana frontier to establish a
farm.
Abraham was large for his age and learned to handle most of the
farm chores at an early age, plowing and chopping wood.
After his
mother died from "milk sickness" in 1818, his father remarried
and
brought his new wife and her
three children by an earlier marriage to the Lincoln farm. Sarah
Lincoln
was a kindly woman and educated her children, including Abraham, as
well
as she was able. As he aged, Abraham proved to be a curious
individual
and read prodigiously and involving himself in a number of enterprises
-
ferryman, storekeeper, postmaster, surveyor.
In
1834,
he
was
elected
to
the Illinois state legistlature and was re-elected for 4
more terms.
During
this time, he made a living through his law practice, which
he had
begun
in 1836. In 1842 he married Mary Todd, a Lexington
Kentucky woman
with
her own inner demons. In 1846, Lincoln was elected to the US
Congress
and served unnoticed. A Whig, Lincoln campaigned for
the election
of
Zachary Taylor, who, once elected offered him the governorship
of the
new
territory of Oregon, which Lincoln refused. Lincoln left politics
for
a time to pursue his law practice and his attention to changes in the
system
allowed him to create a thriving practice that included many emerging
corporations
and to hone his skills in 'speechifying' and debate. In
1854,
however,
his political zeal was rekindled when the Missouri Compromise,
which
established
the
terms
of
slavery in new territories, was about to be
rewritten
allowing
slavery to spread to a significantly larger part of the US. This
Kansas
and Nebraska Act was proposed by Stephen Douglas, an old
acquaintance
of
Lincoln. It divided the Whig party and established a
new party
which eventually offered Lincoln on an unsuccessful bid for vice
president, then the Senate, though his political power grew in his
party. In 1860,
he ran for president and when the opposing party split, he was
nominated
and elected.
Lincoln's presidency was an eventful and painful one, both for
the
nation and personally. He guided the US through a grueling four
years of
civil war, pushed legislation to end slavery in the
US and was
re-elected
in 1864, but was unable to see his reconstrction plans
carried out as
he
was assassinated while attending a performance at Fords
Theatre in
April,
1865 by John Wilkes Boothe.
