Born Norma Jean Mortenson in Los
Angeles,
California, Marilyn's life was both a Hollywood success and
tragedy. In and out of Orphanages and foster homes, she led an
unhappy early life and finally married at 16 to escape another stay in
an orphanage. Her husband joined the merchant marines
in 1943 and
she began working at the Radioplane Munitions factory, where she was
spotted by a photographer and encouraged to become a model. She
dyed her brown hair blonde and appeared in many ads for advertisements
and men's magazines. In 1946 she auditioned for20th Century Fox and became a contract player in films. Her first role was in the film Dangerous Years in 1947 with a speaking role as a waitress. Her breakthrough came a few years later and her roles, mostly sexy interests, help her to become known as the "cheescake queen". Several failed marriages, emotional difficulties, and health problems plagued her life even while her career boomed and she became a top billed sought after star. Movies such as Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire established her firmly as a comedy and musical star. Her later career was troubled and she became known as difficult to work with, though she was still sought after as an actress. Her death in 1962 from a drug overdose was ruled suicide . Marilyn Monroe was the defining sex symbol of the 50s and her image as a legendary American figure continues. #H319 One piece dress has natural waistline with full skirt.
