She was the epitome of the Blonde
Bombshell. Born Norma Jean Mortenson on June 1st,
1926, her
surname was changed to Baker, her mother's first husband. After
living a drama filled childhood in a succession of foster homes, Norma
Jean married a neighborhood boy, who subsequently enlisted in the
merchant marines as WWII broke out. Norma Jean worked in a
munitions plant where she was encouraged by a war photographer to
become a model, so she bleached her hair and did so, appearing on a
number of magazine covers and began a career in the movies as well as a
bit player for 20th Century Fox. After WWII, her film
work was
sketchy, and she returned to modeling for a bit, then appeared in a
film with the Marx brothers and did a series of pin up
photos. Her film
breakthrough came in 1950 when she appeared in The Asphalt Jungle
and
several other films. Some nude photos taken in 1949 were seen by
Hugh Hefner and she was asked to be the first Playboy Playmate in
1953. Her notable films include many musicals such as Diamonds
Are
a Girl's Best Friend, Gentleman Prefer Blondes and Some
