Black Cohosh
Cimifuga racemosa - Medicinal - Perennial shrub
(Also known as: Black Snake Root, Rattle Root, Squaw Root, Bugbane)
Best known as a women's herb, the hard woody roots have been used as
a bitter tonic to treat aches, coughs, fevers, rattlesnake bite, tuberculosis,
rheumatic compaints, and whooping cough. The plant is a native North
American species, growing best in moist woodland areas. Leaves resemble
woodland ferns and the blooms appear as long white spikes, slightly drooping.
The plant is hardy to -40F (-40C)and grows to a height of 6ft.
