Cilantro
Coriandrum sativum - Annual; Culinary
(Also known as Coriander)
The young leaves are known as cilantro. They resemble parsley
and lend a musky taste to food. Seeds (coriander) are used in cooking,
and to treat stomach upset. A poultice made from them has been used
to treat rheumatism. The seeds are also pressed to obtain an oil
used in the making of soap and plastics. The plant has parsley-like
leaves which mature into fine fern-like sprays of leaves which produce
the tiny white blooms that become seed pods. It can be used as a companion
plant to repel aphids and spider mites. The plant prefers full sun and
grows to a height of 2-3ft.
