Bilberry
Vaccinum myrtillus - Culinary, Medicinal
Fruits of this useful plant are used in making jelly, jam and preserves and in making all manner of desserts. They can be dried like currents for later use as well. The leaves are made into teas to treat urinary tract complaints, mouth ulcers, cough, circulation problems and eye disorders. There are also those who suggest that blackberry tea is useful in the treatment of diabetes. The plants themselves are adaptable to a variety of conditions, but perform best when planted in a slightly acidic soil (pH 4.5 to 6). They grow approximately 2 ft. tall.
